BOSTON, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (10-9, 2-3 NEWMAC) handed Emerson (13-6, 4-1 NEWMAC) their first conference loss of the season with a thrilling 75-72 victory over the Lions on Saturday afternoon from the Brown and Plofker Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- The scarlet and white opened the game on a 9-4 run sparked by five points from sophomore Catherine Antwi and two points from both graduate student Alaina Schatzabel and first-year Cyriah Coleman before a layup from sophomore Kailey Rios pushed the edge to 11-6 with 5:19 to play in the first.
- Rios then hit a triple and layups from both Antwi and Coleman before the end of the quarter helped the scarlet and white take an 18-13 lead into the second.
- Emerson opened the second quarter on a 9-3 run with the Clark points coming off free throws from Schatzabel and Rios before Antwi hit another jumper to regain the lead.
- Senior Megan Swedberg scored the Cougars next four points and Coleman added the final four points of the half for Clark as the team led 32-29 at the break.
- Rios, sophomore Olivia Shipley, and Coleman combined for Clark's first eight points of the third quarter, but Emerson opened the period on an 18-8 run capped off by a pair of free throws from Bri Frongillo.
- Antwi hit a triple, a layup from sophomore Bella Galatt, and four points from Schatzabel helped bring the Cougars back within six at 55-49.
- The Cougars ended the quarter on an 11-3 run as Coleman led the way with five points and four from Rios helped Clark tie the contest at 58-58 entering the fourth.
- The scarlet and white opened the fourth on a 7-2 run as Schatzabel netted three points, while Antwi and Coleman each scored to give Clark a 65-60 lead with 6:28 to play.
- After Emerson tied the game at 67-67, Schatzabel hit a pair of free throws and a layup with 2:12 remaining as the Cougars held a 71-69 edge.
- Kaylin O'Meara scored the contests next three points to put the Lions in front with 1:35 to go, but Clark's defense held Emerson scoreless after that mark.
- With 0:12 remaining, Schatzabel grabbed a rebound off a missed triple and made a layup to put the Cougars up 73-72 and after a missed triple by the Lions, Rios closed the game with a pair of made free throws to come away with a 75-72 victory.
