Field Hockey Secures First NEWMAC Win with 3-1 Victory Over Wellesley

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University field hockey (9-7, 1-6 NEWMAC) hosted Wellesley College (5-10, 3-4 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night for a conference clash under the lights. The Cougars took control with a second-quarter go-ahead goal, then added a pair of insurance tallies in the fourth. Wellesley found the back of the cage late, but Clark held firm to capture its first NEWMAC win of the season, 3-1.

How it Happened

  • Wellesley came out firing with four shots on goal in the opening seven minutes, but timely stops from junior Rachel Reiter kept things level.

  • Blue goalkeeper Hannah Simmonds matched her on the other end, making three saves to hold Clark scoreless through the first quarter.

  • The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when senior Alison Kopec found senior Morgan Brown, whose backhand strike floated into the top corner for a 1-0 Cougar lead.

  •  Reiter added two more saves before halftime to preserve the advantage.

  • The third quarter turned into a goalie showcase, with Reiter tallying five saves and Simmonds adding three as the 1-0 score held.

  • Clark finally broke through again in the fourth when Kopec weaved through defenders and buried a shot into the bottom corner to double the lead.

  • First-year Carys Mitchell added her name to the scoresheet moments later, cleaning up a rebound to make it 3-0.

  • Wellesley's Madeline Hamstra spoiled the shutout in the final minute, slipping in a late goal to set the 3-1 final.
