Men's Soccer Holds Off MIT, Earns First NEWMAC Victory 3-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University men's soccer (5-8-2, 1-4-1 NEWMAC) traveled to Cambridge on Wednesday night to face MIT (3-8-4, 1-4-1 NEWMAC) in a late-season conference matchup. The Cougars struck early in both halves and added a late insurance goal to secure a 3-2 victory, earning their first conference win of the season.

How it Happened

  • Clark struck first in the 8th minute, as junior Carter Benoff sent a perfect ball off the free kick and into the box to find senior captain Ben Siegel. Despite facing away from goal, Siegel managed to deflect the pass with a header to make it 1-0.

  • Senior Diego Marin preserved the lead for Clark with a clutch diving save just moments later.

  • Marin added another save later in the half, while Siegel and freshman Theo Massie-Vereker each had shots on goal turned away, sending Clark into the break with a 1-0 lead.

  • Just like in the first half, the Cougars struck quickly after the break. Junior Myles Nelson-Atkins threaded a pass through the defense to senior Luke Sheldon, who tucked the ball just inside the near post to make it 2-0.

  • MIT found an answer with 25 minutes to play, as Jesse Hedequist created space just inside the corner of the 18 and sent a shot inside the near post to cut the deficit to 2-1.

  • The one-goal margin lasted just two and a half minutes, as Nelson-Atkins won the ball off a throw-in, pushed forward into space, and buried a shot into the left corner to restore Clark's two-goal lead.

  • The Engineers ramped up the pressure as the half wore on, finally breaking through in the 88th minute when Gianluca Balestrieri won the race to a long cross and finished with a strong strike into the bottom right corner to make it 3-2.

  • That would prove to be the final chance of the match, as Clark held firm over the last two minutes to secure the 3-2 victory.
