WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's soccer (7-5-5, 3-4-3 NEWMAC) hosted their final home match of the regular season when they welcomed Salve Regina (4-10-3, 2-6-2 NEWMAC) to Granger and scored a pair of first half goals to propel them to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.
The Cougars currently sit in seventh place in the NEWMAC standings with 12 points with one match remaining. Clark is ahead of Wellesley (11) and Coast Guard (10).
How it Happened
- The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as first-year Calabria Augustino sent in a corner that found the foot of senior Emma Shaughnessy and Shaughnessy volleyed the ball into the back right corner of the net in the fourth minute of action.
- Junior Ava Lepro then tallied three saves over the next three minutes, including a header from Jessica Galante off a corner before sophomore Georgia Louis put a pair of shots on goal that were stopped by Emelia DaPonte.
- Calabria serviced in two more corners in the middle of the half and created a chance in the 22nd minute that was saved by DaPonte before nearly adding to the lead with a shot on target in the 25th minute that was stopped.
- The Seahawks tied the match at 1-1 in the 28th minute as Paige Jessuck scored with a shot off a corner from Eilish McGowan.
- Sophomore Selene Hammad sent a corner into the box in the 38th minute, found the foot of junior Sadie Cohen and the ball found first-year Marcela Gonyea and the first-year buried the ball into the corner of the goal to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
- Sophomore Madeleine Reeves created the final chance of the half in the 41st minute that was stopped by DaPonte as Clark held a 2-1 edge.
- Salve controlled the tempo early in the second half as Marissa Perachi and Carah Laclair both had shots saved by Lepro and Leclair later hit the crossbar in the 67th minute.
- Clark's defense held the Seahawks without a shot on goal over the remainder of the game while Louis and fellow sophomore Solimar Rivera each created chances that were saved as the scarlet and white prevailed 2-1.
