Early Deficits Cost Volleyball in Straight Set Loss at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – Clark University volleyball (1-21, 0-9 NEWMAC) traveled to the Wentworth Institute of Technology (18-4, 6-1 CNE) for a non-conference matchup. The Cougars battled throughout all three sets but couldn't overcome early deficits, falling in straight sets 25-12, 25-18, and 25-15.

How it Happened

  • The Leopards leaped in front early in the opening set, taking an 11-2 advantage.

  • Clark battled back, with a service ace from junior Harper Chinn cutting the deficit to six.

  • Wentworth responded by taking the next four points to regain a double-digit lead, cruising to a 25-12 win in the first set.

  • The Leopards once again jumped ahead quickly in the second, scoring six straight points to open play.

  • The Cougars narrowed the gap behind a kill from Chinn and a pair of attacking errors to make it 12-8.

  • Clark continued to fight, with late kills from junior Winifred Gakidis, sophomore Isabella Alcott, and graduate student Isabella Smith, but Wentworth held on to take the set 25-18.

  • In the third set, Wentworth opened with a 6-2 run before Clark responded, cutting the deficit to one at 8-7 on a kill by sophomore Hannah Harrington.

  • The Leopards countered with a four-point burst, then following kills from Chinn and sophomore Abigail Venis, added another three-point stretch to go up 15-9.

  • Wentworth extended its lead from there, and while back-to-back kills from Alcott trimmed the margin to five, that was as close as Clark would get as the Leopards closed out the match with a 25-15 set win.
