Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Clark University volleyball (1-13, 0-5 NEWMAC) traveled to Mount Holyoke College (10-7, 2-3 NEWMAC) for a NEWMAC matchup, marking the start of the second half of the 2025 season for the Cougars. The Lyons were ultimately able to secure the win, pulling away in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21. 

How it Happened

  • After a 4-4 start to the opening set, the Lyons rattled off six straight points to take control.

  • The Cougars responded by winning six of the next nine points, with a kill from junior Harper Chinn cutting the deficit to 13-10.

  • Clark kept the set close, but Mount Holyoke maintained its edge and ultimately took the opener, 25-20.

  • Following a service ace by junior Winifred Gakidis, Clark jumped out to an early 4-3 lead in the second set.

  • The Lyons answered with a five-point run, but the Cougars responded right back with four straight to tie things up at 8-8.

  • With the score even at 11, Mount Holyoke pulled away again with another five-point surge. Clark battled back to make it 21-20, but the Lyons held on to take set two by the same score as the first, 25-20.

  • Once again, the Lyons pulled away midway through the third set, using a six-point run to build a 15-7 advantage.

  • Clark chipped away at the deficit, with a service ace by sophomore Isabella Alcott cutting it to 22-20.

  • That was as close as the Cougars would get, as Mount Holyoke closed things out with a 25-21 win in the final set.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark totaled 16 kills, seven service aces, five blocks, 15 assists, and 28 digs in the match.

  • Chinn led the way with four kills, followed by Alcott and graduate student Isabella Smith, who each tallied three.

  • Alcott also contributed three service aces, while Gakidis and sophomore Hannah Harrington added two apiece.

  • Junior Julia Dopazo paced the Cougars with eight assists, with Harrington adding five.

  • Senior Yumeng Liu recorded a team-high 11 digs — her seventh double-digit effort of the season.

  • Sophomore Abigail Venis continued her strong play at the net, finishing with four blocks for the second straight match.

What's Next

The Scarlet and White will enjoy a week-long hiatus before traveling to Smith College next Tuesday for another NEWMAC matchup, with first serve set for 7:00 PM.
