Women's Basketball Pulls Away From Fitchburg State in 79-37 Win

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Clark University women's basketball team (3-0) traveled to Fitchburg State (1-1) for their first road game of the season and came away with a 79-37 victory sparked by a strong second half on Wednesday night from Parkinson Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • First-year Atiya Watson scored Clark's first four points of the game as the Cougars trailed 5-4 early before fellow first-year Leilani Benson and junior Catherine Antwi each scored to make it a 9-8 ball game in favor of the Falcons.
  • Junior Mia Mabanag scored the Cougars next five points with a layup and a made triple before first-year Karilyn Perez-Guerrero hit a pair of free throws with 0.4 on the clock as Clark took a 15-13 lead into the second quarter.
  • Perez-Guerrero and junior Kailey Rios combined for the first four points of the second quarter and after a made layup by Shanell Smith-Akpan to cut the Falcon deficit down to four, sophomore Cyriah Coleman scored off a feed from junior Bella Galatt to push the lead to 21-15.
  • After three straight Falcon points, Clark scored six unanswered as Watson and Antwi combined for the six points.
  • Watson and Antwi each scored before the half and Clark's defense held the Falcons to three points over the final 6:30 of the quarter as the Cougars took a 31-21 advantage into the half.
  • Fitchburg State cut the deficit to six early in the third before Clark went on a 23-0 run over the next 5:00 minutes sparked by six points from both Coleman and Rios as well as points from Watson, Antwi, and Benson to take a 54-25 edge.
  • Before the end of the third, Antwi connected on a triple and both Rios and Watson scored as Clark took a 61-29 lead into the fourth.
  • In the fourth, the Cougars outscored Fitchburg 18-8 led by six points from senior Ashley Leighton, three from both Antwi and Galatt, and two from Watson, Mabanag, and Benson as Clark recorded a 79-37 victory.

  • Clark made 31 shots, grabbed 43 rebounds, dished out 17 assists, and forced 30 turnovers.
  • Watson led the way with 17 points and made seven shots.
  • Antwi (16) and Rios (10) also reached double-figures in the win.
