DANBURY, Conn.– Clark University men's basketball (3-2) traveled south to take on Western Connecticut State (3-2) on Saturday afternoon. The game featured nine ties and 21 lead changes, with a go-ahead layup by junior Quentin Pridgen proving to be the difference, leading to a 76-75 Cougar victory.
How it Happened
-
Both teams exchanged blows in the first five minutes, with the Wolves taking a 7-5 lead despite a layup from sophomore Boluwasefe John and a three from sophomore Kyle Squires.
-
A jumper from Nicholas Moore gave Western Connecticut State an eight-point lead with 11:01 to play, but threes by senior Reid Neumann and first-year Aliaun Iscandari quickly cut the deficit back to one possession.
-
After a brief Clark lead, an 8-0 run pushed the Wolves ahead by seven, a cushion that didn't last long as back-to-back triples from Squires erased it. A Neumann three moments later gave the Cougars a 26-24 lead with 4:31 to go in the half.
-
Another Neumann three, this time with 2:05 remaining, put Clark ahead 33-32. However, five quick points for the Wolves, followed by yet another Neumann triple, sent Western Connecticut State into the half up 37-36.
-
The lead flipped seven times in the first five minutes of the second half, with a John layup, two threes by Squires, and a layup from first-year Elijah Small giving Clark a 47-46 edge.
-
After Clark briefly held a four-point lead, the Wolves battled back, tying the game at 51 with just under 12 minutes remaining. The game stayed even at 55-all with 10:00 to go.
-
Neumann hit a critical three to pull the Cougars back in front, and after a couple of baskets, another Neumann triple at the seven-minute mark gave Clark its largest lead, 67-58.
-
Western Connecticut State rallied once again, eventually tying the game with 4:05 left before taking a 71-69 lead on two free throws by Jahlyl Morgan.
-
A Squires three briefly put Clark back on top, but layups from Henry and Nick Boyce moved the Wolves ahead 75-72 with 1:05 to play.
-
Iscandari quickly scored to make it a one-point game, and a steal by John gave Clark possession. Following a crucial offensive rebound by Iscandari, junior Quentin Pridgen worked inside and finished at the rim to give Clark a 76-75 lead with 36 seconds left.
-
The Wolves had a chance at the line but couldn't convert, and one final heave at the buzzer was blocked by Iscandari to secure the 76-75 victory for the Cougars.
