Men's Lacrosse Bested by UMass Boston in Road Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The Clark University men's lacrosse team (2-1) traveled to UMass Boston (1-0) for their first road game of the season and were bested 12-7 by the Beacons on Tuesday afternoon from James Cotter Field.

How it Happened
  • Junior Patrick O'Rourke won the first faceoff of the game helping the Cougars gain possession and graduate student Patrick Liddy found the back of the cage less than a minute into the game to give Clark a 1-0 edge.
  • Graduate student Casey McCullough stopped a shot and fellow graduate student Jason Tautel caused a turnover before junior Lucas Cuda found graduate student Colin Howard for the Cougars second goal of the game to go up 2-0.
  • After the Beacons netted two goals of their own, junior Thomas Michaud found the back of the net after a converted clear to put the scarlet and white back in front just over midway through the first quarter.
  • Michaud added his second goal of the afternoon with 3:31 remaining in the first and McCullough tallied three saves as the Cougars took a 4-3 lead into the second.
  • McCullough stopped three more shots to open the second and both first-year Riley Joyce and graduate student Matthew Minkwitz each put attempts on goal that were saved before the Beacons tallied three unanswered goals.
  • Minkwitz found Liddy for a goal with 1:43 until halftime to cut the deficit to one, but Jack Schartner added a goal before the break for UMass Boston to give them a 7-5 edge.
  • Both defenses controlled the pace early in the third and both goalies stopped shots as Minkwitz, Michaud, and graduate student Attilio LaVecchia each saw shots saved before Timothy Sullivan pushed the Beacon lead to 8-5.
  • Liddy added his third goal of the contest later in the third and the Cougars nearly pulled to within one after sophomore Huy Doan won a faceoff and LaVecchia fired a shot that hit the post.
  • Matt Hutchings netted a goal before the end of the third and the Beacons rattled off four unanswered goals despite eight saves from McCullough before senior Matt Wells scored for the Cougars off a feed from Howard before the end of the game as Clark fell 12-7.
