Women's Basketball Bested by No. 6 Smith

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (11-10, 3-4 NEWMAC) welcomed No. 6 Smith (19-1, 7-0 NEWMAC) to the Kneller on Saturday afternoon and fell 84-44 to the Pioneers.

How it Happened
  • The Pioneers scored the first 21 points of the contest led by six points from Virginia Johnson, five from Hannah Martin, four from Maggie Fleming and Allu Landau before sophomore Emma Drefs scored Clark's first points of the game.
  • First-year Cyriah Coleman added five points in a 0:20 second stretch at the end of the first as Smith took a 27-7 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Pioneers netted the first eight points of the second quarter before Drefs made her second layup of the afternoon and points from first-year Juliette Tarsa and junior Ashley Leighton helped cut into the deficit.
  • Sophomore Bella Galatt scored Clark's final points of the half as the Cougars trailed 48-15 at the break.
  • Sophomore Kailey Rios netted Clark's first five points of the third quarter before graduate student Alaina Schatzabel added a pair of free throws.
  • To end the third, Rios added five more points and first-year Alyssa Bordonaro hit two free throws after being fouled to end the quarter as Clark trailed 68-31.
  • In the fourth, Drefs, sophomore Catherine Antwi, Schatzabel, Coleman, and Galatt all scored as the Cougars fell 84-44.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 37 rebounds, forced 15 turnovers, and recorded 10 steals.
  • Rios led the way with 10 points and connected on a pair of triples.
  • Coleman added seven points, three rebounds, and two steals.
  • Nine Cougars scored in the game.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Coast Guard for a road NEWMAC game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
