No. 4 Men's Tennis Blanks No. 5 Wheaton 4-0 to Advance to NEWMAC Semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University men's tennis team (8-10) won a NEWMAC playoff game for the second consecutive year with a convincing 4-0 victory over Wheaton (4-11) on Wednesday afternoon in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals from the Corash Tennis Courts.

How it Happened
Doubles: Clark 3, Wheaton 0 (Clark Wins Doubles Point)
  • Graduate student Tanner Honnef and senior Ryan Hovey earned Clark's first doubles victory of the day as they topped Calvin Van Dyke and Jake Murray 6-4 in number two action.
  • Junior Graham Russo and first-year Ziad Tabbara clinched the doubles point for Clark with a 7-5 victory in a back-and-forth contest against Daniel Bor and Paul Berteaux in number three play.
  • In number one doubles, junior Edward Shepherd-Johnson and sophomore Aris Kirkorian finished their match with a 6-4 win over Jaime Galligo Subirana and Pablo Munoz.
Singles: Clark 3, Wheaton 0
  • Hovey recorded the Cougars first victory in singles after defeating Van Dyke 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets in number five action.
  • In number four singles, Russo tallied Clark's second singles point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Murray.
  • Kirkorian clinched the victory for the scarlet and white with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Munoz in number two play.
  • Tabbara had won his first 6-2 and was leading 5-4 in number three action against Berteaux before the match ended.
  • In number six singles, Honnef took his first set 7-5 and was trailing 1-4 in the second set against Bor.
  • Galligo Subirana won the first set 6-4 and was leading 4-3 against Shepherd-Johnson.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will travel to No. 1 Babson on Friday afternoon in the NEWMAC Semifinals beginning at 3:00 p.m.
