Field Hockey Bested by WPI on Saturday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University field hockey team (6-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) opened conference play against crosstown opponent WPI (5-2, 1-0) and fell 3-0 to the Engineers on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Alison Kopec recorded the first shot attempt of the contest in the sixth minute that was blocked and over a minute stretch later in the quarter, senior Loren Root stopped three shots.
  • WPI got on the board with less than a minute to play in the first as Abbey Powers fired a shot in the circle that beat Root as the Engineers held a 1-0 lead.
  • Lauren Meinhold of WPI nearly extended the lead with a shot attempt that was saved and before the end of the half seniors Elizabeth Cacciapaglia and Morgan Brown fired shots that went wide as the Cougars trailed 1-0 after posting a second quarter in which they only allowed one shot.
  • Meinhold pushed the WPI edge to 2-0 seven minutes into the third with a shot left of the circle that went over the head of junior Rachel Reiter and into the top right corner.
  • First-year Olivia Bass created Clark's best chance of the afternoon with less than two minutes remaining in the third that was saved by Myles Lakin and before the end of the quarter, Reiter tallied a pair of saves as WPI led 2-0.
  • Clark's offense applied pressure early in the fourth as Cacciapaglia and Brown each fired shots that were stopped by Lakin before Kopec created another chance that was blocked with less than eight minutes to play.
  • Leah Uglevich scored off a feed from Arie Lang with less than a minute to go as the Engineers prevailed 3-0.

  • Clark recorded eight shots (three on target) and earned three penalty corners.
  • Cacciapaglia, Brown, and Bass each fired shots on goal.
  • Root and Reiter both stopped four shots.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will be back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Hartford to Granger for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
