Women's Basketball Storms Back in Second Half to Top Emerson 65-53 on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's basketball team (17-7, 8-2 NEWMAC) hosted their senior day game against Emerson (13-11, 4-6 NEWMAC) and overcame a first half deficit to come away with a 65-53 victory on Wednesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

Prior to the game, seniors Kiley Drezek, Sam Golden, and Ashley Leighton were honored for their contributions to the women's basketball program.

How it Happened
  • The Lions jumped out to an early 10-5 lead despite baskets from both first-years Atiya Watson and Leilani Benson before another layup from Benson pulled the Cougars to within three at 10-7 with 4:22 to go in the quarter.
  • After four straight Emerson points, junior Catherine Antwi rattled off four points and a Benson free throw brought them back within two before Leighton scored four points before the end of the quarter as Clark trailed 19-16.
  • Watson and Shipley combined for the Cougars first four points of the second before Shipley and Antwi rattled off five unanswered to take a 25-24 edge with 4:42 to go.
  • Drezek then scored five unanswered, but five points from Jessie Silk and Lindsay Gould of Emerson gave the Lions a 32-30 lead entering the locker room.
  • Shipley and Watson combined for Clark's first four points of the third and after trailing by five, the Cougars scored nine unanswered points sparked by three points from Antwi to give them a 45-39 advantage with 2:29 to go.
  • After a Frongillo three cut the lead to three, Shipley made a layup off a feed Drezek as the Cougars led 47-42 entering the fourth.
  • Antwi hit two three-pointers before a three-pointer from junior Kailey Rios off a pass from junior Emma Drefs pushed Clark's edge to 58-46 with 5:59 to play.
  • Drefs and Benson combined for the Cougars next five points before Shipley scored made a layup to push the lead to as many as 17 with just over two minutes to play as the Cougars prevailed 65-53.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark made 27 shots, grabbed 48 rebounds, dished out 21 assists, and forced 25 turnovers.
  • Antwi led the team with 16 points and connected on four three-pointers.
  • Shipley also reached double-figures with 12 points and blocked two shots.
  • Benson and Coleman tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
What's Next
The Cougars will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel down Park Ave for a contest against WPI beginning at 3:00 p.m.
