Men's Lacrosse Stumble After Strong Start vs Wheaton in Renny Classic

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University men's lacrosse (0-10, 0-3 NEWMAC) hosted Wheaton (9-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) for the Renny Classic at Granger field. After starting strong, the Cougars couldn't sustain their early offense, ultimately falling 11-6 at home.

How it Happened

  • The Cougars came out of the gates firing, starting with a pass from sophomore Michael Berman Annunziata to sophomore Maxwell Biondi for the game's opening goal. They followed that up with seniors Thomas Michaud and Brett Newman linking up for the second goal just a minute later.

  • Clark made it three goals in three minutes as Berman Annunziata scored unassisted to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead with 10:12 remaining in the first quarter.

  • Wheaton responded with two goals over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to one. Both offenses stalled from there, with a save by junior Josh Reno in the final seconds keeping it a 3-2 game after one.

  • Clark rang the post to start the second quarter, but it was the Lyons who struck first, scoring with 10:43 to play in the half to tie the game.

  • Sophomore Thomas Sheehan put Clark back in front, scooping up a ground ball in the defensive end and racing the length of the field before firing a shot into the net with 9:18 to play.

  • Wheaton answered just over a minute later to tie the game at four. Both teams traded chances over the next few minutes, but a pair of saves kept it even until a Lyons goal with 2:32 remaining gave them their first lead.

  • Juniors Eric Aswad and Jason Shackley each put shots on goal in the final ninety seconds, but two more saves preserved a 5-4 Wheaton lead at halftime.

  • The Lyons pushed their lead to two just over a minute into the third quarter and turned away two more shots to maintain the advantage.

  • Wheaton extended the lead further, scoring twice in the span of a minute to double their edge. After killing off a penalty, the Lyons added another goal with 2:12 remaining in the third to take a 9-4 lead into the final quarter.

  • The Cougars struck first in the fourth, ending the run with a goal two minutes in as Michaud found junior Tate Gorman for the finish.

  • Wheaton responded after the ensuing faceoff, turning aside a shot before scoring twice more to make it 11-5 with 9:51 remaining.

  • Berman Annunziata added an unassisted goal with 3:47 left, but that would be the final score as Wheaton secured an 11-6 win on the road.
