WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University men's soccer team (2-4-2, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) hosted No. 18 nationally ranked Wheaton (5-1-3, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) on a windy Saturday afternoon. Before kickoff, the Cougars honored Ted Sotiropoulos '72, one of the top offensive players in the history of Clark men's soccer. Following a scoreless first half, first-year Julian Dubash would launch a ball from his own half that found its way to the back of the net, proving to be the game-winner in Clark's 1-0 victory.
How it Happened
- Wheaton would come out of the gates firing, striking the post in the fifth minute and forcing two saves from senior Jaime Pedraza over the next five minutes.
- Seniors Carter Benoff and Marc Kim each fired shots over the course of the half, but one was blocked while the other sailed wide.
- Pedraza would add another save in the 38th minute to keep the game scoreless heading into the halftime break.
- Following two off-target shots from the Lyons to start the half, sophomore Brendan Stevenson would tap a pass to Dubash on the Cougars' side of the field. Dubash would launch the ball downfield, where it would be pushed by the strong winds and one-hop the keeper for an incredible opening goal.
- Wheaton would ramp up the pressure, forcing saves from Pedraza in the 71st, 73rd, and 83rd minutes. The final save would prove to be the last chance of the game as the Cougars held on for a huge 1-0 win.
Inside the Box Score
- Dubash netted his second goal of the season and is officially responsible for both of Clark's game-winning goals this season.
- Stevenson picked up the assist, the first of his career.
- Dubash, Stevenson, first-year Nicolas Dorr, junior Christopher O'Neil, and senior Myles Nelson-Atkins each played the full 90 minutes in the field for the Cougars.
- Pedraza secured the shutout with seven critical saves in the one-goal victory.
