Three Second-Half Goals Fuel 3-2 Field Hockey Win vs NEC

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University field hockey (2-1) returned home Tuesday night to host New England College (NEC) (0-2). The Pilgrims struck first, but the Cougars responded with three second-half goals to secure the 3-2 win at home.

How it Happened

  • The Cougars had the first three shots of the game, with sophomores Katelyn Towne and Olivia Bass combining for the three attempts.
  • The Pilgrims struck first, with Kacey McClay getting behind the defense, rebounding her first attempt after it was saved and finishing on the second effort to make it 1-0.
  • That was the final shot of the first quarter as NEC entered the break with a one-goal lead.
  • Clark recorded its first shot on goal off the stick of first-year Mackenzie Kleefisch just 36 seconds into the second quarter, but the attempt was saved.
  • Clark added five shots over the final 14 minutes but remained scoreless in the half. Senior Rachel Reiter added a late save to keep the score at 1-0 entering the break.
  • Sophomore Sedona Lee started the scoring for Clark early in the second half, punching home her own saved shot to tie the game at one apiece.
  • NEC retook the lead three minutes later, with Mary Kelley finding the back of the cage to make it 2-1.
  • Two minutes later, the game was tied again, with Towne rifling a shot into the corner of the cage to make it 2-2 at the end of three quarters.
  • Following an early save from Reiter, Bass put a ball in front of the cage that was deflected home by Lee for her second goal of the game and the first lead for Clark with 12 minutes remaining.
  • Reiter added a save a minute later before making another crucial stop with six minutes remaining. Those proved to be the final shots on goal of the match as the Cougars held on for the 3-2 win.
