Worcester, Mass. - Wheaton College men's soccer
sophomore Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy) scored the
lone goal in the 17th minute, and junior Cole Davidson (Needham,
MA/Salisbury School) made a season-high eight saves to back the
Lyons to a 1-0 league victory at Clark University's Granger Field
on Saturday.
The contest was a rematch of a 2008 New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament first-round game, also won
1-0 by the Lyons.
Wheaton, which is receiving national votes from the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) while standing fourth in the
New England poll, improved to 12-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Cougars slipped to 9-4-1 and 1-3-1 in seeing their five-game
unbeaten streak end. All of their losses this season have been by
one goal.
Freshman Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) had seven
stops for Clark, which held advantages of 18-13 in shots and 7-2 in
corner kicks. Wheaton improved to 15-2-1 in the all-time series, as
the loser in contests between the schools has now been blanked 13
times.
Thomas got the Lyons on the board at 16:46, heading home freshman
Cecil Jeffrey's (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) pass for his first
marker of the season. Despite grabbing the lead, Wheaton was
outshot 11-5 in the opening half, with Davidson recording five
saves.
The Lyons increased their offensive pressure in the second half,
matching their first-half shot total by the 59th minute and holding
an 8-7 edge for the period. The hosts continued to push for the
equalizer, taking five of the stanza's six corner kicks, but came
away empty.
The Cougars are off until next Saturday when they visit Coast
Guard.
