Worcester, Mass. - Visiting Springfield placed
three players in double figures led by Kelly Slattery's 18 points
and the Pride pulled away from host Clark in the second half to
post a 57-48 win in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the
Kneller Athletic Center.
With the win, the Pride extend their winning streak to a
season-best three, while the Cougars drop their fourth consecutive
contest and have now lost eight of their last nine.
After scoring the game's first four points, Clark made just one
basket over the next eight minutes and Springfield took advantage,
going ahead by as many as ten in the first half. The Pride settled
for a 28-25 halftime lead, as the Cougars' Ivori Aiken (Harlem, N.Y.) came off the bench to score seven
first half points and Hannah Lacaire (East
Brookfield, Mass.) capped the first stanza with a short jumper with
two seconds left.
Clark took a brief lead at 32-30 three minutes into the second
half, but back-to-back layups from Slattery gave Springfield the
lead.
The Cougars did tie the game at 38-38 with less than ten minutes
left, but Abby Connors drained a triple and then when Clark had the
lead down to one moments later, Slattery found space for another
hoop, which was quickly followed by an Aiken inside basket, making
the score 48-46 with 5:30 left.
From that point on, the Pride outscored the Cougars 9-2, with
Connors delivering a three-point bomb to ignite the run.
Neither team shot particularly effective, connecting on just 33
percent of their shots, but Clark struggled in the second half
specifically, going 11-for-37 (29 percent).
The Cougars committed just 17 turnovers, but made just 3-of-18
three-pointers.
In addition to her 18 points, Slattery added nine rebounds, while
Connors finished with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Kelly Murphy was the other visitor in double figures as she totaled
14 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Aiken paced the Cougar attack with 15 points and six boards in just
17 minutes, while Kate Minister (Manchester,
England) collected 14 points. Jillian Camilleri
(Lancaster, Mass.) finished with eight points and a game-high ten
rebounds for Clark, who slips to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in NEWMAC
play.
Springfield, now 7-8 overall and 5-3 in league action, returns to
the hardwood on Wednesday when they host Smith, while the Cougars
get back in action on Wednesday against Babson.
