Worcester, Mass. - Powered by the interior
dominance of sophomores Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) and
Nicole Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.), Babson cruised to an 80-51 win
over host Clark on Wednesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center
in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's
basketball action.
With the win, the Beavers extend their winning streak to five games
and more importantly improve to 13-3 overall and remain undefeated
in league action at 9-0. Conversely, the Cougars drop to 3-13
overall and 2-7 in NEWMAC action and have now dropped five
consecutive contests.
Wurdeman got Babson off and running in the opening minutes of the
game, scoring the first eight points of the contest helping the
Beavers to a 12-4 lead in the early portion of the game.
Clark kept the game under single digits for most of the first half
and got as close as 23-22 following an Ivori Aiken
(Harlem, N.Y.) jumper. After Kate Minister
(Manchester, England) made the game 27-24 with 4:23 left, the
Beavers went on a 9-0 run to close the half and open up a 36-24
lead at the break.
The Cougars' scoring drought extended three minutes into the second
half, but a pair of Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury,
Mass.) free throws had the score at 36-26, but another Beaver spurt
- this one a 14-2 run which featured 10 points from King - put the
game out reach at 52-28 with 13:29 left.
Babson controlled the glass, outrebounding Clark 55-31, including a
28-13 edge on the offensive end which led to a 28-7 advantage in
second chance points.
The Beavers forced 22 turnovers which they converted into 23 points
and held a sizable edge (38-12) in points in the paint.
Wurdeman, who was in foul trouble for a large portion of the
contest, registered a game-high 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting to
go along with nine rebounds in just 21 minutes.
King, meanwhile, recorded a double-double with 21 points, 12
rebounds and five assists. Freshman Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.)
chipped in with ten points, seven rebounds, three assists and three
steals.
The Cougars were paced by Aiken who came off the bench to score 19
points in 23 minutes on 8-for-17 shooting.
Clark will look to return to the win column on Saturday when they
visit MIT, while the Beavers return to the hardwood on Saturday as
well with a home contest against Springfield.
