Cougars Fall To Smith, 6-3

Northampton, Mass.- Smith College nailed down their first win of the season behind five victories at singles in a 6-3 win over Clark University in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference finale on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith (1-6, 1-6 NEWMAC) trailed 2-1 after doubles play, with only the duo of Nikki Anderson and Maggie Steiner recording a win. 

Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) was victorious at No. 1 doubles, teaming with Sarah Sachs for an 8-1 win, then she rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 striaght set win at No. 1 singles.

The pair topped Clark's duo of Julia Bergeron and Emily Schweitzer 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, while Clair Oblamski and Eunice Zhao came close to recording their third straight win at No. 3 doubles, falling narrowly to Maggie Swann and Olivia Levine 9-8 (7-5).

The Pioneers put the match away in singles play, winning Nos. 2-6. Anderson toppled Sachs 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while Teague knocked off Bergeron 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.  Oblamski also won by a 6-2, 6-2 count, defeating Swann at No. 4.

Steiner was the third Pioneer to win by a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline, cruising past Olivia Levine at No. 5, and Eunice Zhao put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.

Clark will take part in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, from October 15 through the 17.
