Babson Park, Mass. – Six different
players earned wins for the Babson College women's tennis team on
Saturday morning, as the Beavers defeated visiting Clark
University, 7-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) match at the Farwell Courts.
With the win, Babson improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in league
play, while the Cougars fell to 3-6 overall and 0-5 in the
conference.
The Beavers grabbed an early 2-1 lead in doubles play, beginning
when senior captain Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) and junior
Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) combined to win their match at number
two, 8-2. Senior captain Caroline Hobert (Longmeadow, Mass.) then
teamed with sophomore Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) on an 8-5 win
at number three.
Clark's first point of the day came at number one doubles, where
first-years Gaby
Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) and Sarah
Sachs (Branford, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-4 triumph.
Suriano then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in her match at first
singles, but that would prove to be all Babson would allow as the
Beavers swept the remaining five matchups for the overall 7-2
win.
Posting singles wins for the hosts were junior captain Rebecca
Stone (Dover, Mass.), who won at number two, 6-0, 6-4, first-year
Inna Loseva (Riga, Latvia), who prevailed at three, 6-2, 6-3,
Mercer, who coasted at four, 6-0, 6-1, Lake, who gutted out a 6-4,
4-6, 1-0 (10-4) suberbreaker win at five, and Lorido, who won, 6-3,
6-2, at six.
