Second Half Surge Gives UNE Tournament Title

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - Down by 14 at the half and by as many as 16 in the second half, the University of New England used a 20-0 run early in the second period to storm back and defeat Clark University, 67-58, in the final of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament played Sunday afternoon at Brown-Plofker Gym.

After the Cougars scored the first bucket of the final frame to push the advantage to 44-28, senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) and junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) combined to reel off the next 13 points to jumpstart the spurt that gave the Nor'easters a 48-44 edge with 11:04 to play.

During the Nor'Easters second half blitz, Clark struggled from the floor connecting on just 22 percent of its shots (7-for-31) en route to just 16 points while committing 13 of their 23 turnovers.

The teams traded small leads throughout the first period, before a pair of treys from Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and another by Kate Minister (Manchester, England) on three consecutive possessions turned a 31-26 margin into a 14-point cushion just before the break. In the opening stanza, Clark shot 50 percent (17 of 34) from the field and went 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc in building their 42-28 halftime edge.

Paradis finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals, to earn tournament MVP honors. Bunnell added 17 points - 11 in the second half - and junior Margo Russell chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Both players were named to the All-Tournament team.

Minister paced Clark with 16 points and 10 boards, while Giedymin and freshman Emily Reilly (Marlborough, Mass.) tallied 13 points apiece in support. Esther Cohn (Carrboro, N.C.) came off the bench to haul in a game-high 12 rebounds in 23 minutes - the second time in three games this season in which she has recorded 12 or more rebounds.

Minister and Reilly found the remaining spots on the All-Tournament team, along with Kristin Fahey of Trinity College (Conn.). The Bantams took the consolation match against host Emerson earlier in the day, 59-42.

UNE is back in action Tuesday, when Bowdoin (ranked No. 18 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll) visits for a 6 p.m. contest.

The Cougars are off until next Saturday (Nov. 27, 7 p.m.) when they travel to No. 1 Amherst.
