Babson Park, Mass. - The Babson College women's
basketball team bridged the first and second halves with an 18-2
run as the Beavers remained unbeaten in New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a 65-42 win over
visiting Clark University on Wednesday night.
With their 13th straight victory, the Beavers improved to 21-3
overall and 17-0 in the conference, while Clark fell to 4-20
overall and 3-14 in the NEWMAC.
Babson was led by the inside duo of first-year Sarah Collins
(Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Damisi Adewumi (Bronz, N.Y.), who both
finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Kathleen King
(Framingham, Mass.) finished a strong all-around effort with nine
points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks shots, and three
steals, and first-year Jessica Aruda (Hanover, Mass.) added eight
points, three assists, and three steals in a standout performance
off the bench. The Beavers also received six points, five boards,
and four assists from sophomore Michelle Kenel (Rockaway Beach,
N.J.) and 11 points from first-year Allanah Wynn (Quincy,
Mass.).
Clark was paced by Kate
Minister (Manchester, England), who finished with 15
points and seven rebounds. Senior captain Jillian
Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) added six points, eight
boards, and three steals for the visitors, but first-year
Kelsey
Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the only other Cougar
with more than three points as she finished with four points and
four caroms.
The Cougars stayed close early on, trailing by only four after a
Minister three-pointer made it 19-15 with 7:41 left in the first
half. Another trifecta by Minister later in the period cut
Babsons advantage to seven (29-22), but Babson closed the half
with an 8-2 burst to take a 37-24 advantage into halftime. Aruda
scored the first four points of the run for the Beavers, while
Kenel notched assists on consecutive fast-break baskets by
sophomore Becky Bowman (Melrose, Mass.) and Adewumi.
Babson continued the onslaught early in the second half, scoring
the first 10 points to inflate its lead to 47-24 less than three
minutes in. Clark would get to within 15 on two occasions in the
final five minutes, but the Beavers scored the final eight points
of the game to run away with the 65-42 victory.
Both teams close out their regulars season play with home games on
Saturday. Babson will look to complete a regular season sweep of
the NEWMAC when it hosts Mount Holyoke at 2 p.m., while Clark
welcomes Coast Guard in a huge matchup at 1 p.m. The Cougars need a
win over Coast Guard coupled with an MIT victory at Smith to claim
the eighth and final spot in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament.
