Worcester, Mass. - Behind a balanced scoring
attack that only one play reach double figures, Clark cruised to a
season-ending 58-47 win over visiting Coast Guard in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball action on
Saturday at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The win for the Cougars wasn't enough to put them into the
postseason however, as Smith's 55-35 win over MIT, secured the No.
8 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament for the Coast Guard.
It marks the first time since Clark entered the NEWMAC in 1996-97
that they will miss the conference tournament.
In today's game, the Cougars came out firing, making 50 percent of
their first half shots, including a 6-for-10 performance from
behind the arc.
As the clock wound down in the first half, Clark led by as many as
19, as the defense held the Bears to 27 percent shooting and forced
11 turnovers in the opening stanza.
The 40 first half points for the Cougars are the most for them in
the first half this season and are equaled to or more points than
they have scored in two games this season.
Things changed in the second half, as the Bears outscored the
Cougars 24-18, with most of those points coming from Melissa
Martinelli, who had 14 of her game-high 20 points and all 13 of her
rebounds in the final 20 minutes.
Coast Guard got the Clark down to ten on a few occasions in the
second half, but never got closer as Cougars picked up their fifth
win of the season.
Ivori
Aiken (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Cougars with 11 points
off the bench in just 16 minutes, while Jillian
Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.), Kate
Minister (Manchester, England) each had nine points
and Maggie
Croft (East Aurora, N.Y.) and Shinikwa
James (The Bronx, N.Y.) each added eight.
Coast Guard will visit Babson on Wednesday in the quarterfinal
round of the NEWMAC tournament.
