Worcester, Mass. - Clark senior Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) scored 14 points, including
the 1,000th of her career, but visiting Wheaton, behind a game-high
22 points from Jenny Champney, took control in the second half and
cruised to a 75-59 win in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
Camilleri eclipsed the historic barrier late in the second half
after picking off a Lyon pass and driving coast-to-coast and
hitting a short jumper with 2:39 left in the game.
The 17th member of the Clark women's basketball 1,000-point club,
Camilleri now has 1,003 career points.
Wheaton raced out to an early lead and steadily built it to double
digits in the waning moments of the first half as Champney
dominated the interior, scoring 14 first half points, staking the
Lyons to a 35-25 halftime lead.
The Cougars actually had the Wheaton lead down to seven following a
triple from sophomore Kate Minister (Manchester,
England) on the first possession of the second half, but the Lyons
responded with a 9-0 burst to give them a 16 point lead at 44-28
with just under 17 minutes left.
From that point on Clark never got closer than ten again and as
time wound down Wheaton led by as many as 19 before settling for
the 16 point victory.
With Champney leading the way shooting 10-for-15 from the field,
the Lyons outscored Clark 20-6 in the paint and controlled the
boards to the tune of a 47-29 edge.
In addition to Camilleri, who added seven rebounds to her totals,
another bright spot was Minister, who registered a career-high 23
points and connected on a career-best six three-pointers.
Champney added eight rebounds and five blocks in her 29 minutes of
action, while Andrea Bailey added 11 points, eight rebounds and two
assists and Jeana Trimboli provided 13 points, seven assists and
three steals.
With the win, Wheaton improves to 13-7 overall and 10-3 in league
play, while the Cougars drop to 4-16 and 3-10 in NEWMAC action.
Clark returns to action on Saturday, with a home contest against
Mount Holyoke beginning at 1 p.m.
