Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore Will
Van Noppen (Providence, R.I.) recorded his first
collegiate hat trick as the Clark University men's soccer
team opened up the 2010 season with a convincing, 7-1 victory over
visiting Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday afternoon on Granger
Soccer Field.
Van Noppen's three goal afternoon was highlighted by his
second goal which came just four seconds into the second half,
giving the Cougars a commanding 4-0 lead.
While the NCAA Record Book doesn't keep a fastest goal in
the second half statistic, it does keep one for the fastest goal to
start a game. That record belongs to Stuart Hulke of Roger
Williams, who scored four seconds into a game with Johnson &
Wales on September 14, 1999.
The Cougars got the scoring started when Baran
Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) scored on a penalty kick less than
two minutes into the match.
Clark scored again when sophomore Gianluca
Ranallo (Scarsdale, N.Y.) set up Van Noppen for his first
tally of the season.
The Cougars closed out the first half scoring when freshman
Brian Arsenault (Portland, Maine) collected his first collegiate
score, making the game 3-0.
Arsenault then assisted on Van Noppen's ultra-quick goal.
Taking the ball to start the second half, Arsenault tapped the ball
to Van Noppen, who then blasted a shot from the center circle that
screamed past Chargers' netminder Max
Williams.
Van Noppen wrapped up his afternoon with another score at the
49:33 mark, giving him four career goals and an assist in just
three career contests. After collecting an assist in his first
career contest and a goal in his second, Van Noppen missed the
remainder of his freshman season with an injury.
Clark then scored two more goals to mark the third straight
season in which they have had a seven goal contest.
Junior Adrian Blackadar (Warwick, R.I.) scored
on a penalty kick and then sophomore Jacob Stern found a loose ball
following a corner kick and notched his first collegiate tally.
Colby-Sawyer did get a score in the 67th minute from
Mark Laskowski to end the hopes of a shutout.
Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) didn't need
to make a save in his 57 minutes in goal to pick up the win, while
Williams, who saw his team outshot 23-4, turned back nine shots in
defeat.
Clark returns to the field on Friday when they take on Becker on
Granger Field as part of the Worcester City Tournament. Kickoff is
slated for 6:30 p.m.
