Norton, Mass. – The Clark University
women's tennis team opened up NEWMAC play with an 8-1 loss at
the hands of defending conference champion Wheaton on Saturday
afternoon.
The Cougars lone victory came courtesy of freshman Gaby
Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) who knocked off the
Lyons' No. 1, Sarah Geocaris the nation's No. 45
player. Geocaris entered the match with a 16-7 career record at No.
1, but went down in straight sets to Suriano (6-0, 6-1).
Suriano is now 3-0 at No. 1 singles to start her career and has
yet to drop a set.
All five of the other singles matches were straight set
victories for Wheaton, including Lyndsay Cooke's 6-0, 6-0 win
over Julia Bergeron (Lewsiton, Maine) at No. 3
singles.
The Cougars will look to bounce back into the win column on
Tuesday with a home match against Emanuel College.
