Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Clark University freshman Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) scored the game-winning goal in the 108th minute and the host Cougars rallied for the second straight contest, posting a 2-1 double-overtime win over Eastern Nazarene in non-league men's soccer action on Monday evening.
With the win, Clark improves to 7-5-2, while the Lions drop their fourth straight to slip to 3-13.
The Cougars dominated the game statistically, holding a remarkable 30-13 edge in shots and an amazing 18-2 advantage in corner kicks.
With all that said, it was still Eastern Nazarene who cracked the scoring column first when freshman Jared Corbin (Fallston, Md.) set up Chris Scearbo (Boxford, Mass.) for a 1-0 Lion lead at the 18:15 mark.
Clark became the aggressor in the second half, peppering the Eastern Nazarene goalkeeping combination of Seagers Rodriguez (Belgium, India) and Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) with 17 shots – several of which hit either the post or the crossbar.
The Cougars finally broke through when Gianluca Ranallo (Scarsdale, N.Y.) handed out his NEWMAC-leading seventh assist on Zapata's first goal, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the overtime period and it seemed as if the game was headed for a tie when a goal kick by Clark netminder Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) bounced off of a couple of players at midfield and rolled to Trevor Hendry (Waterford, Conn.).
The senior captain sent a ball into the Eastern Nazarene end that Zapata chased down and beat Johnson with a low shot going left to right for his team-leading fourth game-winner of the season at 107:12.
King turned back four shots for his seventh win of the season, while Rodrigues and Johnson combined to stop eight shots.
Clark will return to action on Saturday with a crucial NEWMAC matchup against MIT, while Eastern Nazarene visits University of New England on Wednesday.
