Babson Blanks Clark, 9-0

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Babson improved to 9-1 overall with a convincing 9-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday.

The Beavers also jump to 5-1 in league play, while the Cougars remain winless at 0-7 overall and 0-6 in conference action.

Babson opened up by winning two of the three doubles matches by 8-0 scores. The Beaver duo of Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and Alex Freeman (Mansfield, Mass.) defeated Julia Bergeron (Lewiston, Maine) and Virginia Cooke (Shelton, Conn.) at No. 1, then at No. 3 Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) and Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) took down Holly DiMichele (Redlands, Calif.) and Rose Burberry-Martin (Uxbridge, Mass.).

Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) and Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) had the toughest time of any Babson combination, but they eventually downed Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) and Kristen Cullity (Carver, Mass.) 8-4 at No. 2.

In singles action, five of the matches resulted in straight set wins for the Beavers, led by Freeman's 6-1, 6-1 win over Bergeron at No. 1.

Whitaker defeated Swann 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) blanked Cooke at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.

Both Ferraro at No. 5, who beat DiMichele 6-1, 6-0, and Lorido at No. 6, who knocked off Burberry-Martin 6-2, 6-0 had relatively easy times in posting wins.

The match of the day came at No. 4 singles where Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) and Cullity played a three-set thriller. Cullity took the first, 6-2, but Fischer responded, taking the second, 6-2. Fischer eventually pulled out the match, winning the third, 10-4.

Clark will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday when it hosts Smith, while the Beavers play Wellesley on Tuesday as well.
