Box Score Worcester, Mass. – The frontline combination of Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.), Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) and Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) dominated the interior, combining to score 74 points and visiting Babson College ran away from Clark University, 80-51, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
The win for the Beavers is their fifth straight and 54th consecutive league victory, improving their record to 13-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference action.
Clark meanwhile drops their third game in a row to dip to 10-6 and now stands at 6-3 in NEWMAC play and is locked in a four-way tie for second with Smith, Springfield and Wellesley.
The game was close for most of the first half until Babson went on a 12-4 run to push their lead to 36-23 with 2:40 remaining in the half. The Cougars, responded almost immediately, ending the half on a 7-0 burst capped by an Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) jumper to go into the half down 36-30.
Three Beaver turnovers to open the second half surrounded by a pair of Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) baskets had the Cougars within two less than two minutes into the half.
After a few possessions and few made baskets by each team, Babson found themselves ahead 44-38 and then embarked on a game-changing 14-0 run highlighted by some excellent interior passing.
Clark struggled offensively during that stretch as they missed eight straight shots and committed four fouls and found themselves down, 58-38, at the 9:59 mark.
Babson's advantage ballooned to 28 after a 14-6 run over a four minute span, making the score 74-46 and then reached its peak at 32 following a Wurdeman rebound at putback with 1:18 left.
The Beavers controlled the paint, outscoring the Cougars 52-20 and held a commanding 52-23 edge on the glass. 19 of their rebounds were offensive, leading to a 24-9 advantage in second chance points.
Clark had shooting woes in the final 20 minutes, as the connected on just 27 percent of their attempts (8-for-29) and misfired on all eight of their second half three-point attempts.
Babson, meanwhile, shot 50 percent from the field in the second stanza and 49 percent for the game and had 19 assists on their 33 baskets.
Collins led all scorers with 30 points and ten rebounds on 13-for-19 shooting, while Wurdeman chipped in with 26 points (10-for-18) and ten boards. King stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points (7-for-15), a game-high 18 rebounds, four assists and three steals in 31 minutes, marking the second time this season in which all three recorded double-doubles.
Clark was paced by Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine), who totaled 14 points and five rebounds, while Condon (12 points) and Reilly (10 points) joined her in double figures.
The Beavers, who entered the game ranked No. 20 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Division III Top 25 Poll, will return to action on Saturday with a visit to Coast Guard, while the Cougars will look to get back on track with a trip to crosstown rival WPI on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
