Northampton, Mass. – Eleven years to the day that the Clark University women's tennis team last won a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match, the Cougars snapped a 76-match regular season losing streak by defeating league rival Smith College, 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to their first league win, the Cougars improved to 6-8 overall, an impressive turnaround under first-year year head coach Dan Munsey who took over a program that went 0-11 in 2011.

Smith actually got their first point of the season when Jordan Dubin and Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas notched an 8-1 win over Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) and Sarah Sachs (North Branford, Conn.) at the No. 2 spot.  

Clark moved into an early lead when the duo of Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) defeated Bayla Weick and Haruka Shimoto 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) topped Lindsay Roth and Andrea Tanco 8-4 at No. 3.

Smith earned three wins at singles, including Dubin 's 6-3, 6-0 win over Sachs at No. 2, and Gouchoe-Hanas earned a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win over Hughes at No. 4. Ashley Burke grabbed another win at No. 5, with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Snyder.

Clark got singles wins from Suriano, who notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Weick at No. 1, and Ziemer, who defeated Camilla Skalski 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.  Swann earned the decisive win for Clark when she beat Seema Samawi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

The Cougars will conclude their fall season when they travel to Wheaton College on Saturday for a noon start.
