Cougars Edged By Springfield, 5-4

Worcester, Mass. – Down 2-1 following the doubles matches, visiting Springfield College rallied for a 5-4 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars now sit at 5-8 overall and 0-4 in league action while the Pride has won three of their last four matches to improve to 5-3.

Clark had victories at No. 1 singles where Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) defeated Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.) 6-4, 6-0, and Sarah Sachs (North Branford, Conn.) topped Siana Green (Pomfret, Conn.), 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2.

Springfield, however, rolled in the rest of the singles matches, highlighted by Erin Woodbury (Portland, Maine) collecting a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) at No. 3 and Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) knocking off Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

At No. 5, Melanie Thulin (Manchester City, Vt.) had little trouble with Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0 and Vanessa Senecal (Seekonk, Mass.) upended Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.

Clark will return to the courts next Tuesday with a visit to Smith College, while Springfield will take part in the NEWITT this weekend.
