Leicester, Mass. – Powered by 8-0 wins at all three doubles spots, visiting Clark University posted an impressive 8-1 win over Becker College in non-league women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Cougars (1-0) not only gives head coach Dan Munsey his first win at Clark but snaps a 12-match winless streak the stretched back to the end of the 2010 season.
Freshman Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) teamed up with junior Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) to post an 8-0 win at No. 1. They were followed by Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) and Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) at No. 2 and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Lauren Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) at No. 3 with 8-0 wins as well, putting the Cougars ahead 3-0 heading into singles action.
Sachs, playing at No. 1, knocked off Nicole Connolly in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 and Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.) followed suit with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Anna Pilip at No. 3 .
Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) collected a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Kerry Saltvick, while Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and Kravetz also added straight set wins.
The Cougars will travel to Colby-Sawyer on Monday to play both Nichols College (1:00 p.m.) and the host Chargers (4:00 p.m.).
