Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University scored three consecutive goals then used a strong defensive effort late to shake free from a hard-charging Colby-Sawyer squad and post a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Chargers in non-league men's soccer action on Wednesday evening.
The win for the Cougars pushes their record to 2-3, snapping a brief two-game slide while Colby-Sawyer dips to 1-4 having dropped their third straight contest.
Things started out well for the Chargers as Lukas Welch took a Drew Pehoviak (Monson, Mass.) pass and floated a shot over the outstretched arms of Clark netminder Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) just 3:12 into the contest.
Down 1-0, Clark immediately went on the attack and eventually got the equalized in the 23rd minute when Will Van Noppen (Providence, R.I.) corralled a long ball, made a move around a defender and fired a blistering shot past Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Marc-Andre Parent (South Yarmouth, Mass.).
Junior Kent Vorland (Kristiansand, Norway) put the Cougars in front 2-1 when he took a free kick from 25-yards out at 36:51 that found the upper left corner for his first collegiate score.
Van Noppen recorded his second goal in spectacular fashion as her maneuvered out of a corner surrounded by a pair of defenders and then dribbled down the line and fired a blast past Parent for his NEWMAC-leading seventh goal of the season in the 39th minute.
Things stayed that way until the 63:02 mark when Mike Laskowski (Fremont, N.H.) set up Issac Nichols (Sturbridge, Mass.), cutting the Cougar advantage to 3-2.
Colby-Sawyer would get no closer as Clark was able to collect the victory.
King made three saves for the Cougars in net, while Parent turned back six shots.
Clark will return to action on Saturday with a road trip to Regis, while the Chargers play host to Daniel Webster on Saturday as well.
