Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University snapped a brief two-game slide with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Worcester State in non-league women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at the Hurst Courts.
The Cougars (2-2) swept the three doubles matches beginning with an 8-0 win by Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) at No. 1 over the Lancers' Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) and Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.). That was followed up by Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) and Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) knocking off Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) and Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, Conn.), 8-3 at No. 2. Lauren Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Miranda Biron (Webster, Mass.) and Laura Sarkis (West Springfield, Mass.).
Worcester State picked up a pair of wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Shepard took down Hughes at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win and Biron collected a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Martha Ziemer at No. 5.
Clark, meanwhile, saw Suriano top Tomasetti 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and Sachs post a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Candelieri at No. 2.
Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.) kept the Cougar momentum going with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Michanczyk at No. 4 and Kera Snyder (Portland, Mass.) wrapped everything up with a 6-2, 6-2 closeout at No. 6.
The Lancers (1-1) return to action on Saturday when they visit Bridgewater State to open up Little East Conference play, while the Cougars continue non-league play with a trip to Simmons College on Saturday as well.
