Boston, Mass. – Host Simmons College led 2-1 after a trio of hard fought doubles matches and took three singles matches to defeat Clark University, 5-4, in non-league women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
Simmons junior Margaret Teague paired with freshman Meghan Cokely to defeat Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.) and Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) 8-6 in the number one doubles position and Sabrina Salmela and Rachael Downey defeated Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) 8-3 in the number two spot.
Clark got its doubles victory at No. 3 where Maggie Swann (Portland, Maine) and Lauren Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) topped Casey Gilman and Katie Crowley, 9-7.
In singles play, Suriano won at No. 1, defeating Teague 6-3, 6-4 and Swann picked up a win at No. 5 upending Rachel Sweeney, 6-4, 7-5. Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) also earned a victory at No. 6 with her 6-2, 6-3 decision over Maddie Theoharidis 6-2, 6-3.
Salmela, however, defeated Sachs 6-2, 6-1 at the number two position, while Cokely and Downey collected straight set wins over Kelley and Hughes, respectively.
The Cougars will have a busy week upcoming, hosting Emmanuel College on Tuesday and Emerson College on Wednesday before opening up conference play with a road trip to Babson College on Saturday.
