Box Score Biddeford, Maine -- Sophomore Kyle Russo (Westford, Mass.) netted his second goal of the game with just over 14 minutes left to lift Clark University to a 3-2 victory over the University of New England in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win ends a streak of five straight losses for the Cougars (3-6-1), while the Nor'easters settle at 4-4-2 on the year.
Less than six minutes after UNE tied things up at 2-2, and mere moments following a header by Clark junior Maxwell Lopez (Oakdale, N.Y.) that was cleared off the line by a defender, senior Brian Arsenault (South Portland, Maine) found space on the right side and slipped a through-ball to Russo, whose first touch hit the back of the net around the keeper rushing out.
Big Blue had pulled even in the 71st minute, when junior Sean Goodrich (Gorham, N.H.) put a bending chip from the right side of the box off the left post.
Coming out of halftime with a 2-1 cushion, Lopez nearly doubled the margin for the visitors as he ran onto a free ball and ripped a shot from just inside the top of the box. UNE junior goalie Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) stood his ground though, punching the ball away from danger.
Clark took the lead for a second time near the conclusion of the opening frame, as Russo curled a right-footed shot from the left wing into the upper right corner of the cage in the 44th minute.
Early on, it was senior Zachary Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) that gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. A 5th-minute free kick from the left wing by classmate Josh Demers (Warwick, R.I.) dipped into the box, where Doenmez flicked a header into the right side.
UNE leveled the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute, as first-year Ryan Stephens (Stow, Mass.) carried possession down the left side and sent a low cross into the middle. Senior Kyle McGlone (Peabody, Mass.) was first to the ball, and tucked it just inside the left post.
The Nor'easters had a good chance to gain control of the scoreboard in the 27th minute, but Clark first-year goalie Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.) leapt up to deny a rocket targeting the upper left corner off the foot of Big Blue junior Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.).
Richardson posted five saves to get his first positive decision of the year. On the opposite end of the pitch, McParland recorded 10 stops for UNE.
The visitors finished the night with a 27-10 edge in shots.
Both squads resume their respective league play on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars will head to Springfield College for a 2:30 p.m. match, while the Nor'easters visit Salve Regina University (3 p.m.).
