Worcester, Mass. – In a hotly contested match that came down to the final two singles matches, visiting Smith College edged out Clark University, 6-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday.
The win for the Pioneers gives them their first win of the season along with their first league victory (1-6), while the Cougars fall to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
Smith opened up the match by winning two of the three doubles contests, led by Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J.) and Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria) topping Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine), 8-4 at No. 2.
No. 3 doubles was a back and forth affair with Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash.) and Hana Foe (Tempe, Ariz.) eventually getting past Ellie Bakalchuk (Newton, Mass.) and Molly Igo (Clinton, Mass.) in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (10-7).
The Cougars got their doubles point at No. 1 where Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) breezed past Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J.) and Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif.), 8-1.
Cheung got a little revenge in singles action, where she took down Sachs in straight sets at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1.
Hughes posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Samawi at No. 2 and Kravetz collected a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Yi at No. 3. No. 4 singles went to the Pioneers, with Smith rolling past Snyder, 6-2, 6-1.
Fifth singles was the match of the afternoon as Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla.) and Jen Comi (Northfield, Vt.) locked into lengthy duel that saw Dernbach come out on top in a super tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-2).
Smith then wrapped up the win with Alexandra Steck (Loudonville, N.Y.) posting a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Igo at No. 6.
Clark has little time to recover as they take on Babson in their final home match of the season on Wednesday, while Smith will play their final match of the fall season on Saturday at MIT.
