Lyons Fly By Cougars On Senior Day, 4-1

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Wheaton College erupted for four unanswered goals and the visiting Lyons extended their winning streak against Clark University to seven games with an emphatic 4-1 win over the Cougars in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for Wheaton not only pushes their overall record to 14-5 but locks up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. They will play host to third-seeded Babson in the second semifinal next Saturday slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. at MIT.

Clark actually scored the game's first goal when Vinny Morra (Setauket, N.Y.) found some space and dribbled through the midfield and unleashed a shot that found the back of the net in the upper corner of the goal less than seven minutes into the contest.

Wheaton eventually evened the score as Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I.) found Noah Kosoff (New York, N.Y.) for his seventh goal of the season at 27:30.

Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y.) then took over, taking part in the next three goals that all happened less than seven minutes apart.

First he set up Ben Altneu (Orleans, Mass.) with an excellent pass that Altneu deposited with a blast past Clark netminder Alfonso Alvarez (San Salvador, El Salvador) at 35:33.

He then put the Lyons ahead for good when he headed home a pass from Michael Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn.) less than six minutes later.

After a Wheaton player was taken down in box, Blair calmly converted a penalty kick, notching not only his 16th goal of the season but pushing him into sole possession of sixth place on the Lyons' all-time scoring list with 82 career points.

When the dust had settled, Wheaton had a 4-1 lead that would last for the remainder of the contest.

The visitors held a slim 14-12 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass.) made seven saves for the Lyons to improve to 12-5 on the year, while Alvarez made four stops in his final appearance for the Cougars.
