Box Score Worcester, Mass.—On a night when Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) etched her name in the Clark University record books, it was the balanced scoring attack of Coast Guard that stole the show as the visiting Bears remained undefeated with a 68-57 win over the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
Condon became the 19th player in women's basketball history at Clark to reach the 1,000-point barrier on a three-pointer from the left side corner early in the second half. She finished with a season-best 20 points and now has 1,008 career points in 84 all-time games.
In the end however it was the undefeated Bears - sparked by Worcester-area native Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) – who came out on top, improving to 5-0 for the first time in school history.
Fornaro finished with 16 points and a career-high eight assists, while Brittney Zimmerman added 15 points and Kaitlin Ward registered 12 points and eight rebounds. Dani Knox had her third career double-double, collecting ten points and a career-high tying and game-high 12 rebounds.
Coast Guard shot 40.3 percent from the field (25-62) while making 6 of 12 from behind the arc while Clark was 18 of 52 from the floor (34.6 percent) hitting on 4 of 13 from 3-point range. The Bears held a 52-39 advantage on the glass with 24 offensive rebounds, 18 of those in the second half.
With Clark ahead early on, the Bears went on a 13-0 run ignited by a Zimmerman three-pointer and capped on a jumper by Knox giving the Bears a 20-9 lead with 11:50 left in the opening half. Coast Guard would use a 20-1 run in all taking a 27-10 lead.
The Cougars would go without a field goal for almost ten minutes until Condon scored with 6:45 left to make the score 27-12. The Bears shot 50 percent (15-30) from the field in the first half and led 35-21 at the break as Clark shot just 7 of 31 from the floor (22.6 percent).
Clark cut the deficit to 38-31 on Condon's historic three-pointer, but Coast Guard answered again, this time going on a 14-0 run to take a 52-31 lead with 9:13 left.
The Cougars did not go quietly scoring nine straight to cut the deficit to 52-40 with 7:23 left as Condon and Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) did all the damage in the 9-0 run.
Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly squashed by the Bears as their advantage ballooned back to 16 at 56-40 following a Knox inside hoop with 5:23 left.
Other than Condon, Reilly was the only Cougar in double figures, as she scored all 11 of her points in the second half. Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.
Clark is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Wheaton – the only other undefeated team in the NEWMAC on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
