Box Score Worcester, Mass. – On a night when Clark University honored its lone senior Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) – it was four members of its junior class that took hold and pushed the Cougars to a wire-to-wire 74-61 win over MIT in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
The quartet of Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.), Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) and Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) combined for as many as the entire Engineer squad in securing the sixth and final postseason spot in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament.
Grondin started the game on fire for the Cougars, scoring their first seven points in helping the hosts race out to an early 11-4 edge.
That lead jumped to double digits on a few occasions, including at 40-28 following a Liz Brooks (Charlton, Mass.) layup with less than a minute to go in the half.
MIT cut their ten point halftime deficit to eight on a Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, Calif.) hoop early on, but the Cougars responded with a quick 7-1 run capped by a Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) three-pointer that made the score 47-33 with 17:48 left.
Another Clark spurt – this one a 13-2 run – put Clark ahead as Condon, Brooks and Cohn all found easy paths to the basket.
The lead peaked at 23 after Cohn found a cutting Condon for another inside hoop, making the score 67-44 with 7:16 left and the Engineers never got closer the 13 the rest of the way.
Clark controlled the interior, outscoring MIT 50-30 in the paint and registering a 47-29 edge in rebounds.
The Cougars shot a sizzling 56 percent in the final 20 minutes to finish above 50 percent for the game (51.8).
MIT, meanwhile, connected on just 37 percent from the field but forced 22 Clark turnovers and held the Cougars to a 1-for-10 performance from behind the arc.
In the end, however, it proved to be too much of the Clark Class of 2014. Grondin finished the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, totaling 13 points – all in the first half. Cohn recorded an excellent all- around game with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
Reilly led all scorers with 20 points and added five rebounds and five assists, while Condon flirted with a triple double, racking up 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Mari Kordell (Ijamsville, Md.) paced the Engineer attack with 16 points and six steals, while Ramachandran chipped in with 15 points and four boards.
MIT sees its season come to an end at 11-13, while the Cougars (13-12) will travel to face sixth-seeded Wellesley at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday in a NEWMAC quarterfinal matchup.
