Box Score Northampton, Mass.- Rosa Drummond became the 10th player in school history to score 1,000 points and Smith College extended its winning streak over Clark University to six straight with a 71-56 triumph over the Cougars in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday night.
Smith is now 20-2, and 14-1 against NEWMAC competition, while Clark's record evens up at 11-11, and the Cougars fall to 6-9 in NEWMAC play. It's the second straight year Smith has won 20 games - the Pioneers went 23-6 in 2011-12, setting a new school mark for victories in the process.
The Pioneers led 8-7 on Lauren Weston's layup with 14:52 left in the first half, but both teams would struggle, as Smith missed eight consecutive shots and Clark failed to connect on five, and committed five turnovers in a three minute span. Alyssa Barrett's three with 11:15 to play ended the drought, but the Cougars knotted the score on a layup by Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.).
Smith pushed ahead on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes, starting with Devon Quattrochi's 15 footer and capped by two free throws from Sydney Parkmond. Solis' layup with 27 seconds left in the half put the Pioneers up 31-21 at intermission.
Smith would increase their lead to as many as 17 early in the first half when Weston put back her own miss, but Clark pulled within five at 51-46 on the strength of a 23-8 burst fueled by Condon and Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass). A layup from Zakoske and a three pointer from Quattrocchi put the lead back to 10 points, and Smith never looked back, as Drummond's historic free throw with 4:27 to play put Smith up 64-49, and five straight points from Solis made it 69-52.
Paulina Solis led Smith with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while Devon Quattrocchi and Sydney Parkmond hit double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) topped the scoresheet with 19 points and nine rebounds for Clark, followed by Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) with 12 and Condon with 11.
Clark will travel to Wheaton College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
