Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Emerson College collected its first-ever win in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action by knocking off Clark University, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The Lions, not only pick up their first conference win but also their first win overall to move to 1-6 on the season, while Clark has dropped four straight matches for the second time this season to slip to 2-8.
Emerson got off to a flying start, winning two of the three doubles matches led by the combination of Lacey Russell and Savannah Mosser defeating Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) and Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.), 8-1.
Jana Winfield and Natalie Nicholas moved past Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine), 8-3 but the Cougars bounced back at No. 3 where Molly Igo (Clinton, Mass.) and Jen Comi (Norwich, Vt.) recorded an 8-3 win over Sophie Trilling and Maddie Billis.
Russell defeated Sachs, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, while Mosser topped Hughes, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Things continued in that fashion for the visitors with Winfield getting past Kravetz, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Nicholas registering a 6-1, 6-1 win over Snyder at No. 4.
The Cougars finally got a pair of wins in singles, first at No. 5 where Comi came out on top with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Billis and then Igo won by default over Nora Gonzalez, 6-4, 3-0.
Both teams will return to the courts on Tuesday. Emerson plays host to Babson while the Cougars travel to face MIT.
