Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) dropped in a swooping baby hook shot with 1.8 seconds left, snapping a 59-59 tie, sending visiting Mount Holyoke to a thrilling 61-59 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Lyons not only snaps their seven-game losing streak but denies Cougar head coach Pat Glispin her 500th career win.
Mount Holyoke improves to 5-11 overall and 2-11 in league play, while Clark dips to 8-10 and 5-8 in conference contests.
For Legare, meanwhile, the game-winning hoop capped another spectacular effort for the junior forward, who totaled 21 points and 19 rebounds against the Scarlet and White in their first meeting of the season back in November. She finished today's affair with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds.
Clark seemed to be in control early on, racing out to an 18-6 lead halfway through the first half after Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) found Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) underneath for an easy finish.
Mount Holyoke methodically closed the gap and after a Legare inside finish later in the half, the game was knotted at 24-24.
The Cougars didn't surrender the lead however, and went into halftime ahead 29-27 courtesy of five straight points from Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.).
Things continued to be close until Kate Karraker (Morgantown, W.Va.) dropped in a three-pointer while being fouled, giving the Lyons their first lead at 40-38 with 13:20 remaining.
The lead changed hands six times over the next eight minutes, but when Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn.) gobbled up an offensive rebound and scored on the putback, the Mount Holyoke lead was five at 59-54 with exactly three minutes left to play.
Clark got a Reilly putback off of a missed Brennan triple and then after a Reilly steal, she split a pair from the foul line to get the Cougars closer at 59-57.
Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.) then made two free throws with 1:11 remaining to even the score at 59-59.
The Lyons had a great look at a go ahead three pointer but Karraker's left side attempt spun out and into the hands of Reilly.
Clark had a golden chance to go ahead on its next possession. Reilly weaved her way through some traffic to daylight and looked to be going up for the winning basket but Legare was able to block it towards the sideline and Cohn was called for stepping on the line when she tried to chase the ball down as the shot clock wore down.
After a pair of turnovers – one by each team, Nicole DeMarchena (Amherst, Mass.) was able to find Legare in excellent position on the block and she took advantage, converting the game winning basket.
Mount Holyoke shot 50 percent from the field for the game, including a sizzling 60 percent (12-for-20) in the final 20 minutes.
With Legare leading the way, the Lyons held a 30-22 edge in paint points despite being outrebounded 43-36.
The Cougars forced 22 Mount Holyoke turnovers and scored 20 points off those miscues but they struggled from behind the arc, connecting on just 21 percent of their attempts (4-for-19).
Reilly finished with a team-best 21 points and seven boards, while Cohn notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Both teams are back in action on the road on Wednesday. The Lyons visit Smith at 7:00 p.m. and the Scarlet and White head to Coast Guard.
