Norton, Mass. – Host Wheaton College rolled through a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis match, posting a 9-0 win over Clark University on Thursday afternoon inside the Beard Field House.
With the win the Lyons improve to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in league contests and have locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Cougars, meanwhile, finish their first season under head coach Laurance Kimbrough at 3-11.
Wheaton faced little resistance in doubles competition as they breezed to an early 3-0 lead. Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) teamed up with Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev.) to shutout Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.), 8-0 at No. 1.
That match was followed by Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H.) and Carloine DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt.) besting Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine), 8-1 at No. 2.
The Lyons wrapped up the doubles sweep with another 8-1 win – this one coming courtesy of Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt.) and Carlone Stanclift (Camden, Maine) topping Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) and Emma Coppes (Muncy, Pa.) at No. 3.
Singles action was more of the same for Wheaton as Marlowe at No. 1 and Kathryn Burleson () at No. 4 each registered 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Brazell had an easy time with Kravetz at No. 2, collecting a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Stanclift notched the same result at No. 6 over Gallant.
Snyder put up Clark's best effort before falling 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to Gorham and Furber wrapped up the festivities with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mai at No. 5.
Wheaton will take part in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend before hosting Mount Holyoke in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m.
