Second Half Surge Sends Warriors Past Clark, 74-34

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut outscored Clark University 43-13 in the second half and the visiting Warriors handed the Cougars the worst loss in the series history, posting an eye-popping 74-34 win on Tuesday evening in non-league women's basketball action at the Kneller Athletic Center.

The win for ECSU snaps a four game losing streak and sends their record to 5-4, while the Cougars have now alternated victories in their last five contests and now sit at 3-5.

Clark and the Warriors had met 23 times previously dating back to 1976, and have played some memorable games, including a triple-overtime thriller 15 years ago to the day that the Cougars pulled out 96-89.

Today, however, the Warriors exacted a measure of revenge, opening the second half on a game-sealing 22-2 run that featured four three-pointers from Julia DePoi (Brookfield, Conn.) and when Shannon McCourt (New Fairfield, Conn.) converted a conventional three-point play, the lead had ballooned to 54-23.

The Cougars strung together a couple of possessions where they were able to score as Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) dropped in a pair of jumpers sandwiched around a Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) inside finish, but the Warriors stepped on the gas again. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kristina Forsman (Newington, Conn.) and Danyelle Rodirguez (Willimantic, Conn.) was followed by a Kelly Reardon (Holyoke, Mass.) finish on the fast break, bumping the lead to 40 late in the contest.

Eastern Connecticut shot 50 percent (17-for-34) in the second half and held a sizable edge on the glass (51-33). They outscored the Cougars 36-20 in the paint and turned the Scarlet and White's 17 turnovers into 19 points.

Clark, meanwhile, shot a frigid 25 percent from the field for the game, including an 0-for-12 showing from behind the arc.

DePoi scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, connecting on 4-of-7 from three-point land. Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, Mass.) collected a double-double for the Warriors, totaling 11 points and 12 rebounds, while McCourt added ten points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Brennan was the lone Cougar in double figures, ending with ten points. Olivia Lyons (Belmont, Mass.) had her second strong game on the boards, corralling a team-best nine to go with her seven points.

Clark will be off for final exams until later this month when they take part in the Bowdoin Holiday Classic. They will face the host Polar Bears on December 30 before squaring off with Bates the next day.
