Box Score Worcester, Mass. – In a game that featured 11 lead changes and five ties, host Clark University finally broke free and knocked off Babson College, 74-72, in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Cougars snaps an 11-game losing streak to the Beavers that dated back to the 2006-07 season – a victory that came when the current Clark University class of 2014 was still in high school.
That group of six seniors – Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.), Annmarie Fransen (Belmont, Mass.), Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine), Breeann Redman (Bristol, Conn.) and Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) - who lost seven of the 11 straight to Babson, finally came out on top with one of their best offensive performances of the year.
Things didn't start out that way, however, as Babson (13-12) held the Cougars scoreless for nearly eight minutes to start the game and eventually led 12-4 halfway through the period.
Clark finally got untracked, going on a 16-0 run highlighted by five straight points from Condon and then a little later, five more in a row from Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.). When the dust from the Cougar spurt finally settled, Clark was ahead 24-17 and they went into halftime with a 30-29 edge.
Babson took the lead in the early part of the second half and held it until a Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) dropped in a three-pointer that gave them a 46-43 lead with a little less than 11 minutes to play.
The lead changed hands seven more times over the next six minutes until Condon found Reilly open in the corner for the go ahead three-pointer, making the game 58-56. Clark went ahead 63-56 as Reilly got inside for an easy hoop and Sullivan converted a conventional three-point play.
After Brennan got loose inside for a hoop, it looked as if the Cougars were in control, making the score 69-61 with 3:11 left to play, but the Beavers scored ten of the next 16 points to get within one point. Their run was ignited by Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.), who had a pair of steals, an assist and a three-point play that closed the game to 73-72 with less than a minute to play.
Linnet Graber (Roseland, N.J.) had a chance to give Babson the lead but her layup didn't fall with 26 seconds to go. Reilly split a pair of free throws to keep the Beavers' hopes alive, but Pickering's game-winning three-point attempt from in front of her team's bench clanged off the rim, giving Clark the win.
Pickering paced the Babson offense with 19 points, to go along with six rebounds and seven assists, while Erin Young connected on four three-pointers en route to 14 points. Graber chipped in in with a double-double, collecting ten points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Reilly, ended with a powerful 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Condon added 16 of her own. Sullivan added 13 points off the bench, while Cohn total seven points, ten rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.
Babson's season will continue on Wednesday with a trip to NEWMAC quarterfinals. Seeded fourth, the Beavers will travel to fifth-seeded Wellesley.
Clark, meanwhile, sees its season come to an end with an 11-14 overall record.
