Worcester, Mass. – Worcester State won five of six singles matches and the visiting Lancers breezed to a 7-2 win over Clark University in non-league women's tennis action on Thursday evening at the Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win Worcester State improved to 6-1 on the season, while the Cougars slip to 2-7 overall.
Clark actually got off to a flying start with Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) topping Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Natalie Paul (Worcester, Mass.), 8-1 at No. 1.
After that, Worcester State took the next two doubles matches beginning with Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Megan Shepard getting past Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine), 8-6 at No. 2. That was followed by Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Paige Moriarty (Feeding Hills, Mass.) squeaking by Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.) and Fiorella Hernandez () 9-8 (2) in a tiebreaker at No. 3.
Long opened up singles play for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jankins at No. 1 but it was all Worcester State after that.
Candelieri defeated Kravetz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Paul followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Snyder at No. 3.
Fania Volf (Sharon, Mass.) posted a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 win over Mai at No. 4 and Shepard moved past Hernandez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.
Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Leah Siegel-Reamer at No. 6.
Clark will return to action on Saturday with a NEWMAC matchup at Emerson, while the Lancers visit Bridgewater State on Saturday as well.
