Beavers Slip Past Cougars, 2-1

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) headed home the game-winning goal in the 84th minute and visiting Babson College escaped with a 2-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for the Beavers is their second straight after handing previously undefeated and nationally-ranked UMass-Boston its first loss of the season on Wednesday. They improve to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference contests and now have a nine match unbeaten streak against Clark that dates back to the 2007 season (7-0-2).

For the Scarlet and White, meanwhile, they drop another gut-wrenching decision, falling to 3-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in league games. Of the Cougars eight defeats, six have come by one goal.

Carlos actually put the visitors on the board early in the first half when after Shane Mandel (Syosset, N.Y.) was tackled on a breakaway inside the box, he converted the ensuing penalty kick just 7:09 into the contest.

Clark had a few chances to even the score in the first half but couldn't convert. First, Jackson Cohan-Smith (Portland, Maine) fired a low rolling shot through traffic that was just wide of the left post in the 20th minute. Then later in the period, Jeremy Park (Teaneck, N.J.) fought his way through defenders and was in the box when he was able to get a shot off but it was turned aside by a sliding Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.).

The Beavers also had a few opportunities to double their lead but they also came up empty. In the first half, Harry Salnikow (Hong Kong) beat the Clark defense to a long ball up the right side, cut in and delivered an excellent pass to Ted Hilger (Hopkinton, Mass.) but his sliding shot attempt went wide right in the 43rd minute.

Then in the second stanza the best chance came when Noah Parker (Hampden, Maine) got free from the defense and blasted a rocket that banged off the right post and came right back to him. He had time to settle the ball and let fly another attempt, but that shot was denied by defender Michael Spanos (Waterford, Conn.).

Clark put the pressure on and eventually broke through when Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) had his shot stopped by Donato but the rebound came out in front of the goal and after tons of activity, it bounced out to Kyle Krutis (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who got it under control and slipped a shot past a diving Donato at 82:17 for his first collegiate marker.

Babson wasted little time getting the equalizer as Carlo Arujo (Bradenton, Fla.) launched a throw in that Carlos climbed the ladder to flick in for the game-winner at 83:13.

The shots were even at 14 for each team while Clark had the only corner kick of the game. Both netminders – Babson's Donato and the Cougars' Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) made three saves each.

Clark is off until Thursday when they visit the University of New England for a game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather, while the Beavers will visit Bowdoin College on Monday.
