Box Score Cambridge, Mass. – MIT senior Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) deposited the game winning goal with 16 seconds left in the first overtime session sending the host Engineers, ranked No. 21 in the latest NSCAA poll, to a 1-0 win over Clark University, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.
At the 99:44 mark of the game, Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) sent a pass that was intended for Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas). The ball deflected off of the Clark back line and into Bingham's possession. Bingham settled the ball, turned and fired his sixth game-winning goal of the season into the lower left corner of the net to seal the victory for the Engineers.
Two minutes earlier, Bingham tried to back heel the ball into the corner of the net on a feed from Itani, but his attempt sailed just wide.
The pace for both teams was slow in the opening 45 minutes of action as MIT got off six shots, while Clark only registered three in the stanza.
In the second half, MIT found its bearings early and often. The Cardinal and Gray fired 18 shots - 12 on net – giving them an excellent chance to win the game, before it eventually went to overtime. Bingham nearly put MIT ahead just 53 seconds into the second half, but his attempt was saved by Clark keeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.), preserving the scoreless tie.
Three minutes later, the Cougars were awarded a corner kick, which was taken by Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.). Blais sent the ball into the box, but MIT net minder Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) punched the ball out of harm's way.
Over the final 8:24 of regulation play, the Engineers tallied six shots, five on net, in an attempt to clinch the victory, but Maguire stood his ground in between the pipes for the Cougars, sending the game into extra time.
In overtime, MIT shot the ball three times, twice by Bingham and the other by Wilson, whose attempt at the game winner sailed just wide of the post. However, he was the one to set up the go ahead strike just 1:02 after his shot.
Amereno (10-1-1) made three saves and is now the program leader in shutouts in a single season with 10, while Maguire who was spectacular in goal for the Scarlet and White, turned aside a career-best 14 shots.
MIT outshot Clark by a 27-6 margin and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
